RED RANGER GEMINI is an integrated 5K S35 camera system offering an all-in-one platform for top-tier production use. It features all the benefits of the GEMINI 5K S35 sensor within a compact and simplified body designed for filmmakers. Features such as integrated IOs, 24V power output, shimmed PL mount, and improved thermal performance provide unmatched versatility and reliability in challenging shooting environments.
The RED RANGER GEMINI is engineered to handle the power demands of high-end studio productions. It supports a wide input voltage range (11.5V to 32V), includes independent SDI and AUX power outputs, and features an integrated XLR audio input. A larger fan ensures quieter and more efficient cooling. The system is available in two configurations, compatible with either V-Lock or Gold Mount batteries.
R3D File Format and REDCODE
All videos and frames are recorded using the R3D file format, developed by RED for efficient, high-quality RAW video capture. The R3D format stores 16-bit pixel-defect corrected RAW frames, which are compressed using REDCODE, a wavelet-based compression codec.
RAW data is recorded independently of color settings like ISO or white balance. These parameters are saved as metadata, preserving flexibility for post-production without compromising image quality.
REDCODE reduces file size while maintaining visually lossless quality, allowing longer recording times and easier file management - a key innovation introduced by RED.
Shoot for Video and Stills
High-resolution video captured by RED cameras exceeds the detail needed for professional photo prints. The camera supports simultaneous video and still image capture.
A dedicated Stills mode with optimized presets and swipe-up shortcuts on RED Touch displays makes switching between motion and stills seamless. Full-resolution stills can be extracted from R3D files using REDCINE-X PRO or compatible editing software.
Post Production
Many non-linear editing systems (NLEs) can open and edit R3D files. Compatibility may depend on camera firmware or software version. Check requirements before shooting.

REDCINE-X PRO offers timeline editing, metadata management, and post effects. It includes RED Tether, which allows recording directly to a computer or external drive - bypassing the need to offload from SSDs.
HDRX and MAGIC MOTION
HDRX captures two exposures simultaneously to extend dynamic range by up to 6 stops. The A-track is normally exposed, while the X-track is underexposed for highlight protection. Unlike alternating exposures, both tracks are motion-conjoined, eliminating motion gaps.
MAGIC MOTION is a post-processing method that blends both HDRX tracks. It combines natural motion blur from the A-track with sharp reference from the X-track, mimicking how the human eye perceives motion. This results in an image with superior dynamic range and realistic motion rendering.
