RENT Lomo Super Speed Prime 5 Lens Kit (PL) (18mm,28mm,35mm,50mm,75mm) Features
The Lomo Super Speeds are Soviet-era spherical prime lenses produced during the 1970s and 1980s. Considered top tier in their time, they were developed as fast, cost-effective alternatives to Western optics. Rehoused by GL Optics, these lenses retain their distinctive Soviet character within a significantly upgraded modern cine housing. They deliver low contrast, moderate and flattering sharpness, and a recognizable vintage glow at wide apertures, becoming noticeably sharper when stopped down. Their expressive rendering - including edge softness, flare, and aberrations - makes them a frequent choice for stylized narrative films, music videos, and experimental productions seeking a distinctive cinematic look. Available focal lengths include 18mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm.
Image Fidelity and Focus
Lomo Super Speeds exhibit low contrast, moderate center sharpness, and pronounced falloff toward the frame edges. At wide apertures, highlights bloom and images take on a soft, dreamlike quality. When stopped down, sharpness improves substantially while maintaining vintage warmth and pleasing skin tone reproduction. Color rendition leans warm, and visible aberrations contribute to their overall character.
Handling and Adaptability
The GL Optics rehousing significantly enhances mechanical reliability for professional set use. Features include smooth 330 degree focus rotation for precise adjustments, PL mounts, industry-standard cine gearing, and durable construction. Their compact form factor makes them well suited for handheld and gimbal applications.
Flare and Bokeh
Flaring is bold and stylized, particularly at wider apertures, often producing dramatic veiling and colorful streaking. Bokeh appears textured, swirled, and organic - especially at wider focal lengths - reinforcing their expressive aesthetic.
Image Circle
Lomo Super Speeds provide coverage for Super 35 sensors.
Cinematic Heritage
Developed during the Cold War, Lomo Super Speeds were the Soviet industry’s counterpart to the Zeiss Super Speed lenses. While less technically refined, they offered fast apertures at a lower cost, leading to widespread adoption in Soviet and Eastern European cinema. Rediscovered in the 2010s, they gained renewed popularity for their distinctive optical imperfections and artistic rendering.
