- Overview -
The Nikon Z6 III is a powerful full-frame camera capable of professional-level work, but priced to fit an enthusiast's budget. The Z6 III is the successor to the Z6 II and comes with flagship-level upgrades, including a better autofocus system, pre-capture, and an improved EVF. Creators looking for a camera with top-tier features in a mid-range price tag should not overlook the Nikon Z6 III's 24.5MP partially-stacked CMOS sensor, 6K video, Nikon's flagship EXPEED 7 Processor, and an extremely capable 20 fps of burst shooting in RAW.
Partially Stacked Sensor
The Z6 III is Nikon’s first camera to come equipped with a partially-stacked sensor, helping to keep costs down while still delivering superbly fast performance with reduced rolling shutter and faster burst rates. The sensor is used in tandem with an EXPEED 7 processing engine, which is found in Nikon’s flagship mirrorless cameras like the Z8 and Z9. This allows for speeds up to 10x faster than the Z6II and offers lightning-fast autofocus, burst shooting up to 20 fps in RAW, higher buffer capacity, and more.
6K Internal RAW Video
The Z6 III can record full-pixel readout at 6K60p and 4K120p. Slow-motion playback is also available in Full HD at 240p. Internal 12-bit RAW recording up to 6K60p is possible in N-RAW, Nikon's RAW video format, which delivers much smaller file sizes than other formats. 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling in the ProRes 422 HQ codec and 4:2:0 sampling in the H.265 codec are also supported.
Outstanding Burst Shooting
The partially stacked sensor and processing unit enable an impressive 20 fps in RAW, 60 fps in full-frame JPEG, and 120 fps in DX-crop JPEG. Additionally, users will experience blackout-free shooting to help keep the composition perfect as your subject moves throughout the scene. Over 1000 images can be shot in a burst with the electronic shutter, which equates to approximately 50 seconds of continuous shooting before the buffer fills.
Improved Autofocus System
The EXPEED 7 processor supports Nikon’s 299-point phase-detection autofocus system, which can capture autofocus readings up to 120 fps. An in-camera starlight mode allows focusing down to -10 EV, which is ideal for night photography. Much of the same Subject Detection with Deep Learning Technology seen in the Z9 is used in the Z6 III, enabling the camera to detect specific subject types and helping ensure tack-sharp focus as the subject moves across the frame.
Pixel Shift Technology
When you need more than the Z6III's 24MP resolution, Pixel Shift enables the creation of 96MP files. It does this by utilizing a series of 4-32 shots merged in NX Studio. Pixel Shift is ideal for large files of stationary subjects such as landscapes, product, or architecture.
Synchro VR
IBIS up to 8 stops with select Nikon Z lenses. Great for filmmakers and photographers who need sharp images and shake-free video footage.
Connectivity
The Z6III sports a USB-C port for tethering and powering the camera, a full-sized HDMI port, and a line-in port for professional audio. Also included are the standard headphone and mic jacks.
Nikon Imaging Cloud
Connect directly to WiFi for direct image uploads to cloud services, firmware updates, and the ability to download imaging recipes.
Portrait-Specific Features
The Z6 III boasts numerous features ideal for portraits, including a portrait mode that specifically processes skin for a natural texture and softer feel. Other modes, such as Rich Tone Portrait, Flat Monochrome, Deep Tone Monochrome, and Skin Softening, can help produce an image that is share-ready straight out of the camera. Auto white balance has also been improved to be more accurate with human skin tones.
Lightweight Build
When we look at the hardware behind the Z6 III, it's easy to notice how much smaller it is than Nikon's flagship Z9 and Z8 cameras. In addition, the Z6 III features Nikon's brightest viewfinder at 4000 nits, which is 33% brighter than the Z9. The 5.76m-dot viewfinder has a refresh rate of 120fps, making smoother, lifelike viewing possible through the EVF. The EVF also covers the DCI-P3 color gamut; ideal for hybrid shooters who desire the viewfinder to match their editing monitors. A 170-degree vari-angle 3.2-inch, 2.1-million-dot LCD touchscreen is highly versatile for use in a variety of situations. When we move over to the card slots, you'll notice two slots: one CFexpress Type B slot and one UHS-II SD slot. Finally, premium weather sealing protects the Z6 III against dust and moisture, even in the harshest climates.
