- Overview -

The Nikon Z8 is one of Nikon's flagship full-frame cameras, offering outstanding features for photographers and videographers alike. Building around a 45.7-megapixel stacked sensor and utilizing Nikon's EXPEED 7 Image Processor, the Z8 delivers both top-tier speed and resolution in a single camera body. Boasting up to 20 fps burst RAW shooting, 8K30p recording, and a very impressive autofocus system, the Z8 is an excellent choice for any professional or semi-pro photographer who demands the most from their camera body.

45.7MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
The Z8 utilizes the same sensor as the Z9, a 45.7-megapixel BSI-stacked CMOS sensor that offers outstanding low-light performance, speed, resolution, sharpness, and color. ISO can be extended from 32-102400. The stacked sensor minimizes rolling shutter, and an electronic shutter enables shutter speeds up to 1/32000s. In fact, Nikon has completely forgone a mechanical shutter, meaning less wear and tear on the camera and completely silent operation.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor
The EXPEED 7 Processor is utilized in Nikon's flagship camera models and offers unmatched performance and speed in the Nikon Z6iii, Nikon Z8, and Nikon Z9. The Z8 can capture 20 fps in RAW and 30 fps in JPEG, and up to 120 fps when shooting 11-megapixel stills. Even better, over 1000 RAW images can be buffered in a single burst, meaning you can record image sequences for over 50 seconds continuously. To complement burst shooting, Pre-Release Capture can record frames up to 1 second before the shutter button is depressed.

Quick & Accurate Autofocus
The Z8 utilizes Nikon’s flagship 493-point phase-detection autofocus system, which maintains focus at up to 120 fps. A 3D Tracking AF also pairs with subject detection that is perfect for fast-moving action, such as wildlife or sports. Deep learning technology and sophisticated Subject Detection allow the Z8 to recognize subjects such as humans, animals, airplanes, bicycles, and more. Eye-Detection AF has also been improved for greater accuracy and refined recognition, regardless of the subject's distance. Finally, Starlight mode allows autofocus down to -9 EV, ideal for astrophotography, concerts, and other shooting in extremely low light.

8K30p & 4K120p Recording
The Z8 is just as powerful for video as it is for photo. With full-pixel readout, UHD 8K 30p recording can be captured for approximately 90 minutes, 4k for 2 hours. 4K video can also be oversampled up to 60p for better sharpness and detail. In-video frame grabs can be recorded in-camera to produce up to 33-megapixel stills (during 8K shooting). 8.3K 60p is also supported in N-RAW, which is Nikon's raw recording format that can offer smaller file sizes when compared to other RAW formats. The Z8 also supports internal recording with 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling in ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs.

Powerful Filmmaking Tools
To help filmmakers, the Nikon Z8 includes focus peaking for fast/accurate manual focus, and Zebra stripes and a waveform monitor help with exposure. Additionally, time code generation is supported, as well as a red REC frame indicator.

External Audio
For professional sound, XLR microphones are supported via the Tascam adapter. The Z8 is capable of 24-bit linear PCM internal audio.

Synchro VR
IBIS up to 6 stops when used with select Z lenses for shake-free footage and sharp stills.

Special Features for Portraits

Skin softening can be used to slightly blur the skin for a better texture without ruining the sharpness of the eyes and hair. Auto White Balance has been greatly improved and optimized for human subjects. In the field, photographers can also fine-tune hue and brightness for more precise control and to reduce the post-production work required to achieve the desired results.

Compact Yet Professional Design
The Z8 is 30% smaller than the Z9 and 15% smaller than the D850, and offers specs similar to those of the two cameras in a much more compact body that is easier to work with for photographers who spend their days on the go. A 3.2" 2.1m-dot four-axis tilting touchscreen LCD is highly versatile in both horizontal and vertical orientations. At the same time, the 3.69m-dot OLED Real-Live Viewfinder uses adjustable luminance up to 3000 cd/m2, which allows for better viewing in harsh light. When shooting in burst mode, the viewfinder also features blackout-free viewing and a 120 fps refresh rate.

Extensive Connectivity
The Z8 features a full-sized HDMI port as well as 2 USB-C ports. This configuration of 2 USB-C ports allows the camera to receive power through one and send data through the other.

Differences Between Nikon Z8 and Z9
On paper, the Z8 and Z9 look strikingly similar but differ significantly in price. The Z8 is compact and 30% smaller than the Z9, which features a built-in battery grip and a larger battery that allows for longer shooting times. The Z9 also features two fast CFexpress Type B slots compared to the Z8, which uses one CFexpress Type B and one SD card slot. The Z9 also comes equipped with a built-in GPS/GNSS and a hardwired Ethernet port that is useful for studio, sports, and photojournalism photographers. Finally, the larger size of the Z9 gives it a slight edge in heat dissipation, allowing for longer, continuous recording of 8K footage.
