We spoke to Matthew Charof for a behind the scenes look at 'RECK'.

For people who are learning about RECK for the first time, can you give a quick summary of what the film is about?

Reck is a short film about a Scandinavian family living in Brooklyn NY, struggling with substance use and child neglect who resort to physical violence against each other in order to gain a prescription for pain medication. We are exploring this idea of isolate desperation because that is what a lot of addicts feel, going to great lengths to feed their habit, it is the center of their lives. On the outskirts of our character's addiction is their creative lives as musicians which get’s completely lost and consumed by feelings of stifling regret which transpires as blame and frustration towards each other. The daughter character is neglected in turn and represents the innocence inside us all that will go to great lengths to escape the darkness of this terrible cycle. The light at the end of the tunnel is the love they all have for each other and the hope that everything will be okay if they can just hold on to that, somehow.

Tell us why you chose to film in Brooklyn?

We shot in Brooklyn because it felt true to the story: Two musicians living a simple life in New York City.

How was filming different with COVID?

Because the COVID-19 virus was still going around, we had to make sure to create a set that was safe and followed SAG guidelines. This included buying more insurance, hiring a COVID Officer to monitor and sanitize, getting the cast and crew tested before the shoot and many other things that were a bit complicated but not really a big hassle. Everyone was masked and then the actors took off the masks before shooting. We had to fluff one of our actor’s beard before we rolled because it had been matted to his face because of the mask, that was funny.

What are you hoping for people to take in from this film?

Addiction is a vicious cycle that is incredibly hard to break. I know because I struggled with it since I was 15 years old, smoking weed every single day and using other drugs and alcohol to help numb the pain I was feeling from the experience of growing up in a broken home full of anger, abuse and neglect. It wasn’t until I fell in love with someone very special and saw myself through their eyes that I was able to realize I had a problem and wanted to stop. I decided to stop using and let go of the control I thought I had over my life. It’s been a tough and freeing journey and I hope this movie can inspire and help anyone out there struggling just like I was to have their spiritual awakening and seek the help they deserve. It’s a hard road and there is a lot of pain ahead, but the only way to make it through is to embrace it and I hope to bring that message to the world.

Let’s talk equipment. What did you rent from us and why did you chose them?

We wanted to work with Adorama Rental because they feel like a family company that is always willing to work with our needs. We decided to go with the Zeiss Superspeed lenses because they are really fast and have a nice vintage look. We also rented other camera accessories and all the G&E gear we needed.

How was you overall experience with Adorama Rentals?

Our experience was really smooth and pleasant. Communication exceeded our expectations and pickup and drop-off was really convenient at the Brooklyn location.
