Menachem Silverstein gives us a behind the scenes look at the short film “Tattoo” featuring the inspirational Meir Kay.
Can you tell us what the film is about?
Our film takes place in a world where every flaw appears as a tattoo on your skin. It follows the first person who decides to look past her flaws and the flaws of others to be good. This, in turn, causes a chain reaction of goodness and kindness, which ultimately changes the world.
Is there an official name yet?
We are between "Tattoo" and "Skin Deep"
Where did you get the concept for this short film?
Our film came about when I was sitting one day and reflecting. I was so thankful that people saw me the way I wanted them to and not for my actual flaws. Like how terrible would it be if every time you did something, it presented itself on your skin? If everyone knew every time you lied or every time you felt self concise. How would that affect how you’d be perceived? And thus, the idea was born. If every flaw appeared as a tattoo of your skin, what would the world look like? How would people interact?
Why did you choose NYC for your location?
I’m from NYC, and I feel like the vibe of the city fits perfectly with the overall messaging of the film. NYC looks rough, tough, and dirty, but it also has the biggest heart. People would do anything for their city.
Were there any major differences filming now vs. pre-COVID?
It was definitely more laborious, and we had to make sacrifices. We had to cut scenes and actors and even crew to ensure everyone’s safety. Our final act was supposed to have thirty extras, and we cut it down to eleven. But at a time like this we when people need art and hope more than ever, it was a welcomed challenge.
What made you choose the C300 MK II?
It’s a camera I use a lot. I love the functionality and overall look.
What do you want people to learn or take away from this short film?
I want people to know that flaws make us human. Flaws are the vest teachers and help us learn and grow. What’s most important is to be able to look past your own and other flaws in order to work together to make this world a better place.
When and where can we see the final film?
We’re currently in the editing process. Once the film is completed, we’re going to be submitting it as a short to film festival. Its final home is up in the air for now, but we’ll keep you posted and soon as it’s released.
